Summer will officially begin in a week and a half for our students. Vacations are often great motivation for people because they want to finish so they can enjoy their break.

While everyone is planning on their vacations- maybe a trip somewhere or just a relaxing summer at the pool- hopefully, that plan includes participating in the Jeffco Public Library's Summer Reading Program and the 2016 OMS Student Challenge. The Summer Reading Program and Student Challenge work together for our students to earn prizes while making sure their learning and growth doesn't end.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, young people who do not engage in educational activities during the summer lose about 2 months of grade level learning, especially in mathematical computation skills and reading achievement. In order to help with this, as well as give some energy and competition to our students, we are going to conduct the 2016 OMS Student Challenge. On the tic-tac-toe menu, students have many opportunities to learn, explore, and read. For each box the student successfully completes, they are entered into a drawing of their choice to win prizes such as earbuds, gift cards to restaurants and places, and if the student blacks out the board (meaning they complete all the tasks) they will be entered to win the larger prizes of movie passes, Elitches Passes for the following year, and Water World passes for the following year.

Whether your family decides to participate in the JCPL Summer Reading Program or the OMS Challenge, I hope students are engaged in something exciting, educational, and fun for them this summer.
